Folly Beach is the locals and surfers besch. Not a lot of chain hotels. Some cool shops and restaurants. lots of public access and a great city pier that stretches far out into the Atlantic Ocean check out some helpful links. 
Charleston County Parks operates the County Fishing Pier    The public county pier
Shagging is South Carolinas Dance. Do it at the Island Shag Club  
Surfboards, Skateboards, Beachwear at  the legendary Mckevlins Surf Shop  and  Ocean Surf Shop
 Go to the north end of the island and check out the jettty and Morris Island Lighthouse
Isle of Palms is over the bidge in Mt Pleasant. There is a public Pier and a bustling public beachfront.  Official City Site
 
Sullivans Island just over the bridge from Mt Pleasant. Public beach access restaurants and Fort Moultrie a great place
to watch the big frieght ships come and go from Charleston harbor.
 
Downtown on the peninsula
 The Waterfront Battery and white point gardens  is a great place to walk and tour.  Many attractions downtown check the follonwing links:

 Shop at Citadel Mall and many strip centers. Chain groceries and restaurants as well as quaint shopping areas on upper Savannah Hwy
Sceanic Ashley River rd. district. See the plantations DRAYTON HALL   MIDDLETON PLANTATION 
 MT PLEASANT
The ultimate Charleston bedroom community.  Much in the way  restaurants and shopping.  Check out BOONE HALL PLANTATION
